BESS (Battery Energy Storage System)

Also known as: Battery Storage

A complete energy storage system consisting of a DC block, a power conversion system (PCS), and a unit controller. A BESS can be configured as a modular DC block paired with a standalone PCS, or as an integrated AC block where both are housed in a single enclosure.

In energy storage

On utility-scale projects, a single BESS unit is one functional system — DC block, PCS, and controller operating together. A project site typically deploys multiple BESS units, and the collection of all units together with the shared electrical infrastructure — medium-voltage switchgear, step-up transformers, high-voltage substation, and balance of plant — is referred to as a BESS plant. Understanding whether "BESS" refers to the unit level or the plant level is critical, as specifications, warranties, and performance guarantees are scoped differently at each level.
