IEC 61850
Also known as: GOOSE, MMS, Sampled Values
An international standard (IEC TC57) for communication networks and systems in power utility automation. It defines a standardized data model and a set of protocols — MMS for client-server SCADA data, GOOSE for fast peer-to-peer protection signalling, and Sampled Values for digitized CT/VT measurements — that let protection, control, and monitoring devices interoperate over Ethernet.
In energy storage
In a BESS, IEC 61850 is increasingly specified for the interface between the plant controller, protection relays, and the operator's SCADA, because its vendor-neutral object model lets equipment from different suppliers interoperate. GOOSE carries sub-cycle protection signals between devices (typically 2–4 ms), while MMS handles the slower client-server data used for monitoring and control.
