FFR (Fast Frequency Reserve)
A Nordic frequency regulation product providing ultra-fast active power response to arrest rapid frequency drops. Must be fully activated within 0.7 seconds.
In energy storage
FFR was introduced by the four Nordic TSOs in 2020 to address declining system inertia, and is procured seasonally — primarily for night hours when inertia is lowest. BESS are the dominant providers due to the sub-second activation requirement; the asset must sustain full output for a defined duration (typically 5–30 seconds depending on the product variant).
