Grid services beyond basic energy supply that help maintain system stability — including frequency regulation, reactive power provision, and voltage control. Procured by TSOs to ensure reliable grid operation.
In energy storage
BESS participates in ancillary services through products such as FCR, aFRR, and mFRR, each with different activation times and prequalification requirements set by the local TSO. Participation requires passing prequalification tests that verify the asset's response time, sustained delivery capability, and metering accuracy. On most projects, multiple ancillary service products are combined with wholesale market participation under a revenue stacking strategy.
