BESS Tolling Agreement

Also known as: Toll Agreement

A commercial structure where an asset owner contracts a third party (the "toller") to operate the BESS and retain a share of revenues, while the asset owner receives a fixed toll payment.

Tolling agreements are common in project-financed BESS where lenders require predictable cash flows. The toller — typically a utility, energy trader, or route-to-market provider — takes dispatch control of the asset and optimises it across wholesale and ancillary markets. The asset owner trades upside potential for revenue certainty, which improves bankability and lowers the cost of debt.
