UL 9540A

Also known as: Fire Safety Standard, Fire Safety Certificate

A test method published by Underwriters Laboratories for evaluating thermal runaway fire propagation in battery energy storage systems. Tests are conducted at cell, module, unit, and installation level. Results inform fire suppression design and siting decisions.

In energy storage

UL 9540A testing is performed at up to four levels — cell, module, unit, and installation — with each level only required if the previous level fails to meet the performance criteria for no fire propagation beyond the test specimen. The test results directly determine NFPA 855 compliance decisions on spacing, ventilation, and fire suppression design, and are a standard requirement in insurance underwriting and lender due diligence for BESS projects.
