Active power (P)

Also known as: Real Power

The real power delivered to or absorbed from the grid, measured in MW. Distinguished from reactive power (Q), which supports voltage but does not transfer net energy.

In energy storage

On a BESS plant, active power output is controlled by the PCS in response to MW setpoints issued by the Power Plant Controller (PPC). The PPC receives dispatch commands from the grid operator or energy management system and distributes them across the site's PCS units. Active power limits, ramp rates, and response times are defined in the grid connection agreement and must comply with the applicable grid code.
