PJM Interconnection — the regional transmission organisation coordinating the wholesale electricity market across 13 US states and the District of Columbia. One of the largest electricity markets in the world. PJM operates capacity, energy, and ancillary service markets in which BESS actively participates.

PJM's fast-acting RegD regulation signal updates every 2 seconds and is well-suited to BESS — over 80% of battery revenue in PJM is earned through frequency regulation. BESS also participates in PJM's capacity market (RPM) and energy arbitrage, though the regulation market reforms filed in 2024 are expected to split the signal into up/down products, which will change how batteries optimise their SoC management.
