Day-ahead market

Also known as: DAM, Spot Market

A wholesale electricity market where energy is traded for delivery the following day. Prices are published the day before delivery. BESS operators bid to buy (charge) and sell (discharge) energy at specific hours.

In energy storage

BESS operators use price forecasts and optimisation algorithms to identify profitable charge/discharge windows in the day-ahead schedule, typically targeting the spread between low-price and high-price hours. In many European markets, day-ahead clearing prices are set through a single auction (e.g. EPEX SPOT), and the BESS must be registered as a market participant with the relevant exchange.
